Avishkar Research Convention 2019
Department of Physics, in collaboration with IQAC, Smt. Devkiba Mohansinhji Chauhan College of Commerce and Science, Silvassa, conducted a one day workshop on “ExpEYES – A Portable Science Lab” on 29th November 2019. Around 180 students of 12th science from schools in Silvassa participated in the workshop. Dr. Ajith Kumar B.P., Senior Scientist (H), Electronics and Radio Frequency Lab and Founder developer of the Phoenix project, Inter-University Accelerator Center (IUAC), New Delhi, was the resource person.
The workshop covered topics on how the experiments using ExpEYES can empower students and teachers of science and engineering branches. It was aimed at making understanding of science easier for students. The workshop catered to the main challenge today in the field of science education at a global level that is declining interest of students into science. In today’s world, where the performance of a student is often measured by the ability to memorize than real understanding and where students fail to apply what they learn in the classroom to the things they encounter in real life, the workshop aimed at combating this issue by adopting an inquiry-based, ‘learn-by-doing’ approach i.e. learning by exploring and experimenting. It was also conveyed to the participants that ExpEYES brings the ability to perform experiments with reasonable accuracy, opens up an entirely new path for learning science.
A large number of Physics experiments were demonstrated during the workshop starting from simple experiments like detecting an AC signal to electromagnetic induction, interference of signals, Lissajous Figures, to measure gravity by time of flight, alongside many other applications. Students were fascinated to see the ability of the instrument to capture real-time graphs which offered the important benefit for students to better visualize the associated phenomena and develop a deeper understanding of it. An introductory session on programming using python language was also discussed during the workshop.
The response of student participants was overwhelming. The Department of Physics of Smt. Devkiba Mohansinhji Chauhan College of Commerce and Science has been taking such initiatives to reach out to students and faculties for spreading the power of science. The Management of the college and The Honourable Chairman of Lions Club of Silvassa Charitable Trust, Shri Fatehsinhji M. Chauhan especially appreciated and congratulated the Department of Physics and Science faculty as a whole for this wonderful event. The Principal and Management of Smt. Devkiba Mohansinhji Chauhan College of Commerce and Science always support such events for the benefit of all the student fraternity.
